A Compulsory Medical Examination (CME) is an exam requested by the defendant in a personal injury lawsuit. The exam is often used to gather more information regarding a plaintiff’s condition and injuries. Florida Rules of Civil Procedure 1.360 allows for a CME request in a civil case.

IME

An Independent Medical Examination (IME) is a medical exam that is used to resolve questions about someone's medical condition, including what treatment is necessary and the degree of permanent impairment (or if any), exist.

 

It is an objective evaluation of the injured employee’s medical condition, including, but not limited to, impairment or work status, performed by a physician or an expert medical advisor at the request of a party, a judge of compensation claims, or the department to assist in the resolution of a dispute.

NPE

​A Neuropsychological Evaluation (NPE) involves a series of tests to identify abnormalities in intellect, reasoning, memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed. These tests are conducted by a neuropsychologist or clinical psychologist. The testing is administered on paper or on a computer, usually in an office setting, though sometimes virtually. 

 

The purpose is to determine the extent of functional cognitive impairment caused by the patient’s medical condition.  A neuropsychological evaluation is a functional capacity evaluation for the brain.​​​
